is there a name for white wine and orange juice? it appears, after admittedly a fairly cursory internet search, that the answer is no. being a fan of the mimosa, but still more a fan de facto of wine that’s under $10 a bottle, i’ve developed a taste for simple white wine and orange juice, inarguably pleasant in its own right, but also a handy way to render drinkable an otherwise unpalatable white (similar treatment for reds, see cheap-ass sangria ). in the face of an incomprehensible dearth of imagination on my part, or merely in the interest of readily decodable title, i’ve long referred to this drink as the fauxmosa (fo – mosa, duh), but i think the heyday of that short-shrifting of respect is passing into the twilight.
the drink deserves a name, not patronizing, not derivative.
thus, in the much neglected spirit of a supposed resolution to name cocktails after ever novel in Patrick O Brien’s Aubrey/Maturin series, i dub this simple, pragmatic scamp (but a scamp in dukeling’s dress!) the YELLOW ADMIRAL.
i think this works. particularly since it implicitly regulates the proportion of orange juice in the drink (little enough that it doesn’t turn full orange, but remains a pale, uninspired yellow, mostly wine). although i was also considering “The Commodore,” just because Yellow Admiral is a little unwieldy for something that i drink, and therefore must say, often.
i think the comma key on this thing is threatening to wear out before anyone actually starts reading my blog. hmm.
